For fifteen years, Seema Adinath Chavan cultivated pomegranates. Later, she moved to papaya and then to flowers. The crops changed, but her goal remained the same—to build a stable source of income and find a reliable market.
Eventually, she decided to shift to grapes. On two acres, she produced 26 tonnes of grapes and earned around ₹40 lakh. Her story is about recognising the right time to change and having the courage to act on that decision.
Seema comes from a farming family in Odhaj. Her husband is involved in social work and also serves as the president of a credit society. Seema took responsibility for around three and a half acres of farmland and gained experience by working with different crops over the years.
For the first 15 years, she maintained a pomegranate orchard. When the orchard reached the end of its productive life, she saw it not simply as a loss but as an opportunity to try something new.
She then cultivated papaya and achieved production of around 180 kilograms per plant. Later, she also experimented with flower cultivation.
However, flower farming did not provide the stability she was looking for because of fluctuations in market prices, labour costs and weather conditions. She wanted a crop that could provide better returns and relatively stable market opportunities. That led her to grapes.
Despite having no previous experience in grape cultivation, she planted the R-36 variety on two acres. She carefully learned pruning, irrigation and nutrient management, pest and disease control, bunch quality and market requirements. She also applied lessons from her earlier crops to her new venture.
In the second year itself, she harvested 26 tonnes of grapes from two acres and earned around ₹40 lakh.
This result was not the outcome of a single decision. It came from her habit of observing changing conditions and making timely decisions.
Seema’s journey shows that change in farming is not simply about changing crops. It is about understanding the market, weather, costs and returns—and making the right decision at the right time.
