We are a group of farmers that grow fruits & vegetables on less than 1 Hectare of land for you.
We are smaller than the smallest farmers and hence are called the 'Marginal Farmers' of India.
Many such like us across India together account for 63% of the total farmer population.
Before we take you what we currently do as a collective group of farmers aka 'Farmer-Producer Company (FPC)' here's a little recap from where we started :
Year 2000 :
These were the challenges we faced :
1. Lack of basic infrastructure
2. Lack of right agro advisory
3. Lack of quality agri inputs
4. Fragmented supply chain
5. Poor cold storage facility
6. High post-harvest losses
7. Exploitation by multiple intermediaries
Year 2003-04 :
Alone, we could do so little and so 10 of us got together to overcome the challenges we faced and hopefully change this situation for our farming fraternity someday.
2003 is the year when we became 'farmers-entrepreneurs' from just marginal farmers. We started setting up the necessary infrastructure for the next 1year which included a privately held company, APEDA approved infrastructure which would be capable to export our produce.
In 2004 we got our first direct order and we shipped 4 containers of fresh grapes to the European market.
Year 2006-10 :
In these 4 years we grew in strength - more number of farmers joined us and we were 140+ marginal farmers now working together to bring the change.
We were now shipping our produce across the globe to leading super-markets grossing 150 containers of fresh grapes alone.
Year 2011–13 :
2011 is the milestone year for us - we branded ourselves "Sahyadri Farms" - a Farmer Producer Company (FPC) - by the farmers, of the farmers and for the farmers...!
We graduated from 'farmer-entrepreneurs' to a full fledged 'farmer company' now and overcame most of our challenges.
We setup our own infrastructure, agro advisory team, a world class pack-house, cold storage facility and minimised post-harvest losses.
Our group of farmers jumped almost 4 times from 2010 and touched 550 by 2013.
Year 2014 :
We were now a 'Fort Knox' as Sahyadri Farms crossing 1007 marginal farmers as part of our group and this year we become India's leading exporters of fresh grapes.
We shipped 625 containers of great tasting fresh grapes that is 9000MT valued at US$ 17 million.
This is what the progression looks like from 2004 to 2014 :
Year 2015 :
While we got over most of our challenges, we still faced 2 issues viz. 'Market Access' for our fresh produce which cannot be exported due to shorter shelf life and 'Value Addition' by way of having a way to process our tomatoes, mangoes and bananas into ketchups, purees, pulps, juices and jams.
This would be like crossing the final frontier for us marginal farmers and would make agriculture meaningful, profitable in the true sense i.e."Sustainable for us".
So we set-up 2 divisions :
Retail Division - For reaching our domestic consumers directly with food safe, 100% traceable, farm fresh fruits and vegetables.
Processed Foods Division - For value addition and processing our farm produce into Pulps, Juices & Ketchups.
Alongside, to ensure quality of our farm produce and to also increase every Farm and ultimately every Farmer Profitability we knew we had to get our own Quality Agri Inputs - be it Seeds, Fertilizers, Pesticides, Machinery or even poly houses and drip irrigation systems.
That is why we started our Agri Inputs Division under "Farmer Direct" to source agri inputs directly from quality manufacturers in India and World over.
Our goal is to support every farmer in India marginal, small or large and make sure every Farm, Farmer and Farming become and remain profitable.
